Having freed a "froze" engine and getting it in good, tuned running condition I found that after warm-up a severe miss would develope. Antifreeze leaking into the oil. Felt the problem was isolated to the head gasket, however on further inspection (3 head gaskets later) the block is cracked between each cylinder. Only 1/4" of block separates the cylinder walls. They appeared to belong there because of the uniformity of each. An "old-timer" then told me this was not the case and this was my problem. How do I repair the block without replacing, how deep are these cracks and are their other or deeper problems I should investigate?

TOs are known for doing this, I have seen holes drilled thru the block between the cyls. and allthread put in the holes to draw the block back together. crude and ugly but effective if you cant find a good block. I have also used JB weld on the deck cracks between the cyls. with good results. Its a quick fix that may pay off for you. Good luck, Andy

Joe,

Which problem , the upper or the lower ??

I think there is a block here with both upper

and lower cracks.

TO 20, It is possible that the cracks in the deck
are causing the problem , but more than likely
the problem is cracks in the block at the bottom
of the sleeves ,between the sleeves very much like the ones in the deck. I have seen them crack
all the way down thru the center main bearing
bore.
