Can someone tell me what needs to be changed inside a 6-volt generator to convert it to 12-volt? I have had this done a couple times, but it is time for me to start doing my own. It needs to be rebuilt anyway and I don't want/can't use a replacement generator or alternator.
Thanks,
Geoffrey

You will need a set of 12 volt field coils, and the armature will need to be rewound for 12 volts. Then you need a 12 volt regulator and then change the ignition coil to 12 volt, or add a resistor block. the electrical gauges will have to be changed to work on the higher voltage. The 6 volt lights will last about 2 minutes and go out with a blaze of bright light, so they will need replacing with 12 volt units also. Gene Davis

Gene,
Thanks for the info. I've got the rest of the conversion down, but I didn't know about the generator itself.
Thanks,
Geoffrey

It may be cheaper to purchase a used 12 volt generator to do this job if you can find one in a salvage yard, or some rebuild shop.
