I am rebuilding my '59 Ferguson 35 diesel and am replacing the pistons and liners and etc. The service manual for this tractor states that the pistons have 4 rings, however the new pistons I ordered came with 5. The pistons I removed had 4 rings on them and had a lower groove for a fifth ring (below the gudgeon pin) but none of them had this ring installed. Are the new pistons and rings updated versions? On a side note I've read horror stories about pulling cylinder liners and was preparing for a fight but when I pushed the piston assemblies out the top of the cylinder the liners came out with them. Whew!

I put the beast back together, warmed the engine up with the block heater (radiator line) and turned the key...a little whiff of starter in the air intake...and vroom. No smoke! Sounds great...to date no oil leaking from the valve cover gasket. I'm looking forward to some snow to plow!

I got parts for complete overhaul from Rivrside
Tractor Parts, Memphis, TN. Mine also still
smokes until warm and is hard to start. It is
the nature of the brute. After warm-up it is
a very good tractor.

Phil,
I don't think you need to worry about the 5th ring groove. It was for a redundant scraper ring. I just bought a fixer TO 35 w/23C engine, The pistons were already out and none of them had the 5th ring , just the groove.
Where did you get your pats from? I'll be starting on this project before too long. Good Luck, Jim

I bought a piston/ring/liner set from Walts Tractor Parts (online). They have quite a few parts for the 23C diesel engine. The upper groove on all of the pistons had been widened where the ring gap was and one of the pistons had a groove burned vertically down to the first ring. Needless to say that cylinder didn't fire too efficiently. I had to replace the head 2 years ago (cracked) and replaced all the valves. However, at the time I didn't have the guts to tear into the pistons....should have. I'll be installing the liners and putting it back together, hopefully before the snow gets too deep.

I hope your not overhauling the engine because it is hard to start and smoke a lot. I Know a guy that has three of these and they are all hard to start and smoke. One of the 35"s he decided to have overhauled but it run the same afterwards. So then he brought it to me and I have since had the pump and injectors rebuilt, timed it several times, set the valves and even had the head off once and what ever you do don"t knock the precups out of the head(thats another story). I called all over and most people have never heard of a standard diesel(23C),but I did find a few guys in Canada who had and they claim that the tractor run that way when it was knew and there is no known way to fix them But if someone has any suggestions I"d like to hear them. Just a little info. from my exprience. Thanks
