I was wondering if anyone knows how a John Deere 70 starter gets put back together. I bought a new sprocket to turn the fly-wheel, but it doesn't disengage when it starts and keeps running the starter as it goes.

You say I bought a new sprocket to turn the flywheel .Do you mean the gear in the starter? (Starter Drive) When you put the flywheel cover on did you put the return spring back on the top next to the pedal you step on? Earl

Yes. I put the spring back on, and it pulls back, but the starter gear doesn't kick back out and stays engaged the whole time.

Take it out of the tractor , take it apart & get the fork in the bendix, NOT BEHIND IT.
