Is tach OK?

The tach on my MF TO-35 has not operated since the instrument panel was swapped out when steering box was changed years ago. No tach cable! Is there anyway I can tell if it is OK and just needs a cable? I put a kitchen match in the drive on the back of the tach and turn and the gauge moves. I can move it a quarter turn and the gauge moves and stays in position, if I move it a half it just moves over some more and stays in that position, etc. until I move the drive back to the original position and the pointer goes back to zero. Is this correct? Or does it mean anything at all? I could just put it all back together and try it. I really don't want to have to remove it once I put it all back together. Thanks everyone for all of your help so far. It is looking good. A. D.

I tested mine (IH 300 Utility) with a cordless drill. Chuck your kitchen match in the drill and run it, slow at first to make sure of direction. Then if you know the speed of the drill you should be able to figure out if the tach is okay. Remember that the tach drive is probably geared down from the engine speed, so take that into account.

When turning the drive input as you are doing the needle should move freely and then return just as freely to the starting position. Sounds like the tach is dirty inside. You could take it apart yourself and clean and lube it or a speedometer shop could do it for you. Doc.
