I'm helping a buddy put his tractor engine back together. A machine shop installed the camshaft (without the cam cog attached), but we need to attach the camshaft cog and then install the crankshaft. With every other single cam engine I've put together, mainly harleys, there is a marking on the crank cog and on the cam cog that you just need to line up when you install either the cam or crankshaft. I can't find any markings on either cog with this engine. I did notice a notch on the camshaft itself, but I haven't seen any kind of marking on either of the cogs. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I know there there, I just don't see them.
Thanks in advance.

Tony,

I just did the same thing earlier this week on a 50 8n. Here"s how it goes. The timing gear will have a dimple on the face between two of the teeth. Just make sure the dimple points out (away from the block). The bolt holes are drilled at odd spacings so the timing gear can only go on the cam flange in one direction.

The crank gear has a keyway which fits over a woodruff key on the crankshaft. That"s what sets it"s position. There should be a mark on the face of one of the teeth on the crank gear.

When you stick it all back together, just make sure the marked crank gear tooth nests into the marked cam gear groove and you have it.

good luck,

Notice the position of the crankshaft key... 9:00 o'clock, and the position of the offset drive slot in the camshaft:

Be aware if you have the old pressed-on cam gear a special jig was needed to press it on correctly, and if you have a bolt-on gear, there have been reports of mis-marked replacement gears. The position of the distributor drive slot, and the crankshaft key should point you in the right direction, though.

OK - I have a bunch of questions.
1. What is a crankshaft key? I know the cog can only go on one way on the crankshaft, is that the key?
2. When you say 09:00 position, I"m not sure I"ve got it. The engine is on a stand upside down. Is the 09:00 position opposite the cam side or on the cam side?
3. For the camshaft, what is the offset drive slot? Is that the slot on the camshaft itself (same side as the cog)?
4. It is a bolt on camshaft cog so I think that is pretty straightforward, but we need to align the dot that is on the cam cog with the notch on the camshaft itself. Should the dot line up with the notch in the camshaft?
5. Could you further expand on the relationship between the distributor drive slot (like what it is) and the crankshaft key?
Hey, I appreciate your patience. I"d really like to get this knocked out this week, and this line up thing is the last hold up. v/r Tony
