This is the second winter this has happened to me.....I started up my JD 400 diesel with backhoe and bucket(not sure on the year) and once she started I heard a pop and see all the hydraulic oil on the ground. First time it split the filter cover in half. Second time it snapped the cap screw..... when I went underneath to retrieve the filter and cover I noticed large chunks of ice..... .where could the water be leaking from to get inside that filter??

I just recently bought a JD400 backhoe, end of summer, and checked the oil before buying it. I did not see signs of milkyness and thought I was ok. I had worked on veh"s with hyd systems and knew to check, anyway come the real cold and the brake did not work (1) I have looked over the machine and can not find a reason for the water to be in the oil. In bucket trucks the oil is never changed unless there is a water or metal type problem, that means they go their life with out a hyd oil change. If you find the reason please let me know. The only way I can see oil to have so much water that it is easly visable is to have had it in water or seals that leak and suck water in on the retracting stroke. I know that it will be a chore to change but the oil has to be changed, it does more than crack things. It causes a lot of internal damage, have read about some of it on other sites recently. If I still worked I would have a good place to get rid of the bad oil since I don"t it will be a chalange to get rid of as I would think that there is several gallons in the unit. I think that you should consider changing your oil too. We might be lucky in that it is not into the cylinders yet, just in the res and system where it circulates. Anyway if you get a chance let me know how you make out

Likely condensation--fluid needs to be changed often--or you have a place where rainwater stands that lets it seep in.
