My Ford 4000 has an oil bath air filter. It hasn't been touched in years! I was wondering what the best way would be to convert it to a dry air element? Do they make an adaptable air filter assymbly? Or would i have to make my own?

I made a base plate from aluminum plate and had it welded to a sleeve that fit over the stack. I had them weld a strip across the throat and then drilled and tapped it for a stud. I bought a paper element that was as large as would fit and as thick as they had, I think it's about 14" in diameter and 3" thick. Then I took another piece of plate and drilled and small hole for the stud and put that on top with a wing nut. The whole thing looks very much like what they used on older cars and trucks. I replace the paper element for about $6 once a year.

Clean the mesh in the filter you have, and keep it. They were actually better filters than people think they were.

I have let it soak, completely submerged, in a bucket of diesel fuel for a week. I let it dry out and tapped around on it. It still looks the same. I don"t see how any air can get through it! The oil bowl on the bottom has rusted a little and there are a few holes in it.

It is usually possible to take the mesh out, unroll it, and clean it, and re-install.

If you want to change to a different filter, look at some hot-rod catalogs such as JEGS or Summit Racing. They'll probably have some "K&N" style filters that you can adapt.

I don't think I would use K&N on a tractor -- I have read, but can't absolutely prove, that the washable cloth mesh they use does not filter out fine particles. I would leave the old one alone, as others hav said, but the proper paper filter can be adapted.
