Cleaning Gas Tank

I'm going to have the gas tank from my IH 340 cleaned by a radiator shop. I've heard some folks recommend coating the inside after cleaning. The radiator shop guy recommends against it, saying it's unnecessary and that the coating can lift if it misses adhering to any spots.

I'd appreciate any thoughts. Actually, if I don't need to coat the inside, I could probably clean it myself and save $85. What product should be used?

Paul-I used the kit from Eastwood Company to clean/coat a used tank I bought for my Farmall B. Followed instructions carefully and seemed to turn out great. After several months noticed small silver flakes in the sediment bowl. Wonder now if I made a mistake by using the stuff.

Bob02,I have always had problems with that silver color sealer.I remember pulling peices of it out of a Triumph motorcycle tank cause the whole inside was coming off.For some reason the best seems to be the red tank sealer.right mow I have white alcohol ressitant from JC Whitney but I would like to know where to buy the red coat sealer.[that appears to be what the local rad shop is using sucessfully.]

Hey Dr.Sportster-They silver Eastwood kit is my only experience with tank coatings. I'm not sure about the red coating you mentioned. Later restored an 8N and didn't use a kit. Just cleaned it out well and have had no problems. Thanks for letting me know the silver stuff gave you problems too.

Bob02,Below I said I would not do a new tank.I feel the same way if the whole inside was rusted and the prep treatments dont work well it might be good to NOT try to coat the tank because it does tend to lift sometimes. Its a gamble between lifting off and leaking .

Get the kit from Eastwood. It gives a procedure for cleaning and coating. You can always decide not to coat it after your done cleaning. The whole kit is only about $30.00

Put about 4 big hand full bolt nuts in tank, (1/2" is a good size).. with cap on pack the tank tightly in a cement mixer.....run for about 1/2 hour change position of tank until you have covered the entire in-side surface.....

Look in a Hemmings. This is a good source for products and information. I agree with the other comment. I had my tank coated by a company that specializes in this type of work. Believe it will last until the M is redone again in the year 2078. Hope this helps. Also Hemmings has a web site.

It seems unusual for him to say that since usually rad shops do the best tank coating. You could put stuff inside the tank and shake it up yourself.Iv read about [on this site]placing the tank on the side of the tractor wheels then driving the tractor to spin the tank while its filled with mildly abrasive stuff like nails and b-bs.Then just buy a can of sealer read directions and go with that.I say for 85 bucks who needs him?Coat gas tanks never coat oil tanks.Once you coat inside a tank you have to periodicaly inspect for lifting off.He is correct about possible lifting of sealer.Alot of that depends on the inside condition of the tank .I would probably not coat a new tank myself.Just one opinion.Good luck.

If the tank is not leaking after cleaning it I would not coat it. The cement mixer with nuts in the tank is the best method I have ever seen for cleaning a tank. Rinse it well with kerosene and blow it out with air and use it!!

Just my .02
