I have a 1967 JD 5020 which is leaking hydrolic fluid onto the clutch plates. A previous enquiry on the forum suggested a leaking seal between the engine/gearbox shafts. I have reached the time for doing a repair. I intend splitting the tractor at the bell housing but will I also have to split it at the diff or can I access the shaft/seal from on top of the gearbox? Do the shafts have to be removed? Will I need any special tools or equipment.I should be able to borrow a rig to safely split the tractor Any detailed advice on doing this repair would be very helpful. Thanks for now.

The best advise I can give is to buy the factory service manual. If you think it is a needless expense, think again.

Amen. 1-800-522-7448 for the parts, service and operator's manual. Specialized tools will be listed in there. Even clearances, wear specifications and torque values. Then again who needs those? If I just had a few of those projects that had a minor problem before they were torn all apart. Then left in a heap due to frustration or some vital $$$ component getting wrecked.
