I was reading some of the posts below about cleaning gas tanks and had a question or two. I have this Clean Cream stuff that must have lost it's fizz because it hasn't removed any of the rust out of my tank. One of you had mentoined a radiator shop cleaning the tank which I could do but the nearest radiator shop is 60 miles from me. I do have a machine shop within 15 miles of me. Would his hot tank for engine blocks work? Thanks for any help.

Just cleaned a couple by dumping a gallon of Hydrochloric acid in each one. Rotate the tank so all sides and ends get coated. The acid takes out old varnish and old tetraethyl lead deposits.Don't leave the acid in more than 15 minutes if that long.Flush real good with water and the add a box of baking soda to about a quarter tank of water to neutralize any acid left in the tank.Slosh the soda around too.Immediately dry the tank.I stick a heat gun in the filler neck.No therer should be no gas fumes left in the tank, but be careful with the heat gun. Then I dump in sone phosphoric acid and rotate the tank once again. Then drain the excess acid.Tanks look new inside again.

Hi Todd,

Have you been reading about that guy that takes the things off and straps 'em to a rear tractor tire, puts two or three of handfuls of gravel and drives around the yard? Heck, that just might work.

You shouldn't need any sealer should you? After you are using it and got it full of fuel, there is no way it can rust again. Unless it sets for years and years without being used.

Allan I read that. I think it would work but with my luck it would fall off and get run over. I was told by a guy in town to try a real good paint thinner and a couple dozen half inch nuts inthe tank and shake the heck out of it. But I don't know about the nuts getting behind the baffle in the tank. Maybe I will swipe my son's BB's for his BB gun and try that.

Todd,

I have a hot tank and a spray wash cabinet, hot tank followed by hot water high pressure washer may clean most of the junk out of the tank. Spray wash cabinet definitely won't do it. My cabinet is big enough to clean a 3406 cat, but I ain't happy with it, good cabinet but I'm used to doing a real cleaning . The last gas tank that came in was a 350U IH
and it was really bad. Cooked it in the tank, hot pressure washed it, customer had one of those
new makita 6 inch thin blade cutters, we took the
top out of the tank and dug out all the trash,
put it in the sand blast cabinet to get all the
rust out of the inside. Then I gas welded the top
back in the tank and put the coating in, so far it
seems to be working .

Hey thanks george you gave me a couple of ideas. I have always wondered about taking those old rusty tanks apart.

Todd,

Just make sure it goes thru the hot tank

before you start cutting on it , I don't want to

hear the boom from here. :-)
