I just purchased a piece of land. In an old barn was an old Model M. Let me describe what is there..

Someone took the top of the engine block and that is the only major piece missing. Moron didnt put the hood back on, so there has been water in the pistons for god knows how long.

Other than that, the tractor is basically complete, just rusty as can be.

Anyone take on such a task? Any advise? Good books on rebuilding a model m for a beginner?

Thanks Brian

If your looking for books, there are plenty of them out there. You may want to get a subscription to green magazine. They are on the web. As for parts, you are looking at spending some money if it's in the shape I think it's in. Im in the process of restoring my grandfathers B which set in the fence row behind his shed for 30 years. Parts are plentiful, but quality parts are harder to find. ValuBuilt has core exchanges and a 2 year waranty on parts (their good!). Bob at Triple G service in New York is extreamly knowledgable and has great parts. From my experience, you may want to try breaking the engine loose by pooring diesel in the cylinders and then take a piece of 2 inch square tubing about 4 foot long, and weld some 1 inch bolts onto it to match the holes in the fylwheel. Put this "tool" on the fylwheel and put pressure on it with a come-along and let it set for a while. I have had good luck with this method.

I also am in the middle of a M restoration. Just about ready for paint. Same, here, it was sieze because of water in the cylinder. I went through the same. It took a while to find oversized pistons and a set cost me $300. I also have pictures of some of the work. Let me know your email address.

I am doing a JD M restoration now.
My engine also was siezed up from water in cyl.
I soaked the cyl. down w/ oil/penetrating oil for a couple of weeks then rounded off the corners (so it would fit) of a 4 x 4 block to push against the piston. This was done by using a hardwood bridge over the block & using head bolts to push down.
It broke loose rather easily using this method. This engine does not have sleeves so has to be bored out. Parts and machining cost me ~ $1100, not a cheep project. You will also have to purchase a head which will be ~ $350. Rear wheels/rims are another biggy. Most of them are rusted out from the CACL loading fluid. I cut the centers/rings out, restored them and had them welded into new rims (a lot of work). Good luck!

Appreciate the reply. 1100$ ouch. Do you have any pre-restoration pictures?

Im going to pull it out this weekend and look over the entire tractor and get a feel for what Im going to do. Might break it up and go the ebay route.

I;ll have to look over the rear rims.. On has no tire and is laying in the dirt, which could be good, and there are 2 more laying in the bushes.
