Im trying to get a bearing race thats pressed into a big hunk of cast iron(front end of a tractor) Im trying to get it out with out messing it up too bad cause I hope to find a parts number on the back. If I have a hard time finding a new bearing or race I might have to live with the old ones witch are a little shot. Any ideas? I heard someone say welding a bead around it will cause it to shrink and fall out. Thanks.

Usually after you weld a bead about half the way around the inside of a race and let it cool, you can remove it with your fingers. Let it cool completely before you try to get it out. Have done it numerous times.

If you are going to weld on it, why not weld something onto it that you can beat on to drive it out; or that a bearing pulling slamming hammer can connect to.

I have heard the same thing you have about the weld bead, but have never needed to try it, thank goodness. One other thing about this I have heard is to use a MIG welder, but I don't why that over a stick (more controllable???). Of course you are going to violate your requirement of possibly having to reuse the bearing race.
