Cylinder liner rust pitting

I have a W4 McCormick. The liners are in good shape except the cylinder head was cracked. One of the cylinders sat with water in it as a result. This liner is pitted from the rust on the inside. How bad can this be and still leave the liner and pistons alone. Or is it no question it needs to come out. thanks Rob

A piston can pass over stuff like that ok.Its only bad if lines and grooves run the lenght of the cylinder. The rings on a Harley pass over an oil hole [in some cases]without problem.

I agree. The time the piston takes to pass over a pit is small as compared to the stroke so compression gasses lost will be slight and probably non detectable.

As far as breaking a ring, I think if you have honed the cylinder and the sides are without pertubations sticking out, the ring will pass right over and not know it's there.

I'd do it in a heart beat.

Yes txblu,And we both forgot to mention two strokes where rings pass huge ports in cylinder walls.

I would hone it to the maximum standard bore then see what you have. I the pits are still there I would be afraid of breaking a piston ring at some point.

Rob, I"ve worked on many rusted up engines that people just wanted to get running. If the pits aint as big as your finger tip I"ve had good luck with just a good hone job, clean the piston up good, put on new rings and fire it up. Sometimes they"ll smoke for a spell, sometimes they won"t. You will have to do some work on the head, as the valves will be rusted also. Look the cyl over close and make sure it didn"t freeze and crack, sometimes this will only show up after honing. luck.
