There was a post last year from a man using two plastic tubs to remove paint and take off rust. One tub had lye, the other was muratic acid. My questions are--How much lye per gallon of water? How much muratic acid per gallon of water?

A product called aircraft stripper is available at any auto parts place that sells paint products. It works great and is safe.

That combination sounds like a disaster waiting to happen!

Have you checked into the electrolysis method?

A more mild washing soda bath is used, combined with DC current.

Here's a site with information on electrolysis:

I belive the lye is 3 ounces / 1 gallon water. Add the lye slowly to the water, not the other way around.

I don't remember the ratio for the muratic acid.

Hi,

The muriatic acid is to neutralize the remaining caustic. You shouldn"t need much, if you rinse real good after the caustic bath.

I haven"t used this method before, but would start at a rate of about 1-2 oz to 5 gallons of water. Get some pH paper and monitor the bath as you go. If it gets up over pH of 5 slowly add some more acid.

A better way to go would be to use phosphoric acid. It will cost more, but forms a protective rust resistant barrior.

Please use proper protective gear! These chemicals can splatter you good and you don"t want to get them in an eye! Also, take a long cool shower right after you"re done. The caustic does NOT hurt as it dissolves your skin. That slippery feeling is your skin dissolving...
