Hi. Looking for some input on what to look for. Here is the low down: Been a few weeks since I started my tractor and we got some snow so jumped on it and gave it a crank. Heard a real bad grinding noise then nothing. Pulled starter off and the new Bendix gears were blown apart. Ran out and bought another one and put it on and tried to start again. Nothing happened, pulled starter again and the Bendix was in the locked position, and by the looks the flywheel did not move. Basically heard no noise besides a hum, which to me is that the flywheel did not move. So pulled starter again and pulled spark plugs and tried to rotate the flywheel. Tried this by putting it in 4th gear and lifting the back tire and trying to rotate tire. No movement of the flywheel. Next I had the antifreeze checked and seemed to be around -15 to -20degrees good to. Next plan on draining oil and checking to see if any antifreeze in the oil. So any ideas or what else should I look for. This is my first tractor and up till now it has been running great. Unsure of why all of a sudden this would happen so any input or any help would be great. I figure after the oil check then split the tractor and do some investigating? Thanks for any help Nick

I know this is waaaaa ay late, but - never, never, never, never push the starter button while the starter is still winding down from a previous try. Doing that is the quickest way to jam the drive, bend the shaft, or break the drive.

besides as told about water in engine, trans, there could be water on top of your pistons-seizing them . another problem i used to have if i left the tractor sitting to long was that the pressure plate woulnot release itself from the flywheel. you might as you say check the oil, or drain it then put various so called stuck engine remedies some including transmission oil, kerosene, mystery oil, pb blaster, kroil oil,etc and let sit before you try turning it over by rocking it -just some ideas-good luck

Also forgot to say...it is a 12V starting system not the old 6V.

You might have water in your trann, or rear which could freeze and lock up your drive train. It sort of gets homoginized and stays suspended in the oil unless the tractor sits for a long time.

Course if you push your clutch in when you attempt to start that would eliminate this as a potential problem.

Water in the engine would be at the bottom of the pan so I'd doubt that it would be much of a problem.
