Locked up engine? Maybe...

I got a IH 3514 loader/hoe that was sitting for a couple of years. The previous owner put a lot of work into it prior to parking it. He thinks water got in the engine causing it to lock up. All the covers are on and it had a flap on the stack. I removed the starter, placed it in neutral, and wedged the clutch in. I then tried to move the fly wheel with a bar from underneath. It is solid. Is there anything else obvious that may be locking the engine, like the front hydraulic pump? I really don't want to tear into the engine if I can eliminate the water theory. Please assist.

diesel can lock up with a little water in cylinders due to the high compression sometimes can be pushed out without tear down if can be turned both ways to get valves to open in different cylinders good luck

This probably isn't your problem, but once saw a "locked up" engine that was just freshly rebuilt and installed in a car. Turns out one of the bolts holding the starter was too long and was hitting the flywheel!

Sounds like you are heading for a teardown. Pull the sparkplugs and look for rust on the working ends.

You could also have stuck valves, but I doubt it.

Just thought of something else -- If there is rust in the cylinders, something I'd try as a last resort before tearing the engine down is to pour penetrating oil, diesel fuel, etc., into the cylinders and let it set for a while (maybe weeks). The problem is this will not cure pitted cylinder walls, stuck rings, etc.

One more thing to try -- Loosen the oil dran plug a couple turns. If water drips out, you know what your problem is.

Another way try and break loose a stuck engine is to put the transmission in its highest gear and rock the tractor back and forth by hand. (Caution -- if you have any stuck valves, this will could break something.)

Thanks... George, Its a diesel, so I might see some rust in the injector ports. I like the oil idea, I'll be draining that tonight to see if there is any water.
