I have been told that you can use a 6 volt 3 brush generator with a 12 volt battery and a 12 volt voltage regulator on old Farmall tractors. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is true, is the wiring connecting the generator, voltage regulator, and battery the same as the original 6 volt system? If the 6 volt generator will not work, can you have the field coils changed to 12 coils and make the system work?

Yes, it can be done. The 3rd brush on some generators is ajustable, it can be moved to change output amps. On others it is fixed.

The generator will supply 12 volts if you control the field with a 12 volt regulator. What you must realize is that the total power (Wattage) output of the generator will not increase. Doubling the voltage will halve the amps it is capable of. It will never have the output amperage capabilities of a 12 volt alternator.

For instance: If a generator will supply 10 amps output at 6 volts, it will only supply 5 amps at 12 volts. The wattage output is the same in both instances.

As far as the wiring, I don't have a diagram, but if you get a regulator from a competent starter/generator shop, they should be able to help you with that.

Ok I rethought that after reading what Red Dave said and considering a generator puts out maybe 40 volts until it is regulated by the regulator.Good thing Red Dave read this.Nevermind.

Since nobody is answering this I will give you some off base knowledge of a Harley-Davidson three brush. The extra brush was for the police radio and there is no way it will charge a 12 volt battery because its a six volt generator.Since voltage is the electromotive force that "drives" the electrons in a circuit I cant see it being able to charge a higher volt battery.Maybe Im wrong for a Farmall but I know it aint working on a Harley-Davidson anyway.

It will work, but not very well at low tractor rpm or very long. I have done that converting old 6V Chevrolets to 12V. The 6 V field coils will pull to many amps on 12V which is hard on the field contacts and resistors in the 12V regulator. The armature windings are the wrong guage and length for producing 12V. Use a 12V generator,or better yet a 12V alternator for a dependable charging system.
