I have a 1952 TO-30 Ferguson that was switched over to 12-volt before I got it. I do not think it was done correctly. I want to install a simple on/off switch and then a push button starer switch. I need to rewire this tractor. How do I do this so that the the battery stays charged and everything works properly.

jself,

We have a TO-30 with the exact same problem. We even had the alternator rebuilt and still the battery does not charge.

I posted on this site about this problem and receieved two interesting pieces of information:
1. was a series of wiring diagrams, 2. was the note that another user found that the rpms were not high enough to get the alternator to charge and the engine needed to be reved up.

But we have not fixed the problem yet - too much other stuff going on - but it is on our list.

I could send you the wiring diagrams if you give me your direct email address.

I also agree with the other person and leave the shift activated starter switch in place. I wish my other tractors had that option as well. My three year old is too smart and he can start the push button versions so we have to disconnect the battry terminals. The TO-30 is 'safe', at least for now as the lever is too hard for him to start.

You haven't given any information why the current version isn't working. Sounds like you want to replace the key switch with a toggle switch and you want to replace the gear shift lever switch with a push button starter. That should be easy, but I think it is a mistake to replace the gear shift switch, because that is a safety switch that keeps the operator from starting the tractor in gear and it could be very costly if some operator in the future makes that mistake. If you want more info, perhaps you should go to the Ferguson Board and post the specifics on why the 12 volt conversion doesn't work properly, like for example the volt and amp readings, etc.
