Cub Lo Boy Electrical problem

I have a 185 Lo Boy I recently purchased that is now not starting.
It ran fine for the first couple of weeks. At first I thought I may
have a cable problem. After replacing an obviously dead battery I
discovered I was not getting 12 volts at my generator/alternator.
Tracing back, there was 12 volts getting to the input of the
magnetic switch behind the dash and getting to the ignition switch.
There was no 12 volts coming out of the magnetic switch. So right
now I am leaning to the problem being in either the PTO safety
switch or the clutch safety switch or the magnetic switch itself. I
don't believe the problem is in the clutch switch because I have
been starting the tractor without the clutch pressed in already. I
don't believe that switch is working properly anyway. Has anyone
encountered a problem similar in the past? I guess I am hoping for
a likely direction to start before I start replacing things.

I am also having a little difficulty due to my lack of knowledge of
alternator/generator identification. I know the original 185 had a
generator/voltage regulator configuration. My 185 does not have a
voltage regulator external to the generator. I say "generator"
because it looks like a generator, not an alternator. It is made by
Mando Machinery Corp. and has a F1 and F2, A1 and A2, and couple of
other terminals I can't remember the ID of right off the top of my
head. Is this thing an alternator or a generator without a voltage
regulator?

Any help or advise would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary Hollenbeck

I would almost bet you have a bad safety switch. The cranking circuit comes out of the ign. switch when turned to start, goes through the clutch switch, the pto safety switch, then to the small terminal on the solenoid. Check for 12V at the start terminal on the ign. switch, when turned to start. If you have 12v there the switch is good. Check for 12v at the small terminal on the solenoid when turned to crank,if no 12v there, one of the safety switches or the wiring has an open in it. To test the solenoid, put the tractor in neutral, run a small jumper wire from the small terminal on the solenoid to battery hot side. If the engine spins over the solenoid is good.

You are dealing with a combination starter / generator. Hopefully someone has a wiring diagram to help you. The unit acts as a starter to start the tractor and then switches over to generator mode to charge the system. A good diagram will help you trace the circuit. Time to invest in an owner's manual.

Have the owners manual, read it cover to cover. This generator/alternator/starter is not the original unit. I will continue my quest... I think my problem right now stems from my magnetic switch. Thanks for the reply Big Dog
