WOW, YA GOTTA LOVE THE INTERNET !!! My neighbour has an 8n (?)ford tractor...I do the wrenchin on it and I get to use it whenever I want. We're putting a front end loader unit on it and decided to do the plugs, points, condenser, wires, etc, while we had it tore down....like the dummy I can sometimes be I pulled the plate out of the distributor (the one with the points on it) before I realized that this was also the timing for the engine (?)....how do ya time one of these things ??? We bought a new crank pully for the Hyd pump drive set up and there's no mark on it, which is ok because there's nothing on the engine to match it to anyway...also, how can I figure out the year/model, etc of this tractor ?, the markings on the rear axel indicate it's a 1940 8n Any help from this forum would be GREATLY appreciated as summer is comming and we need to use the ol gal....I hope I work as well when I'm that old !!!!, thanks

8N's were not made in 1940. (9N's WERE made in 1940.) Here's a link to the serial number list:

PS.... Where to look for the serial number... in reply to Bob, 05-09-2005 16:55:12
The TRACTOR serial number should be stamped on the upper LH side of the ENGINE BLOCK.
