18hp briggs stratton starter repair

I need to replace the starter gear and I can"t figure out how to do it without removing the starter and I don"t see how it comes off. Do I need to remove starter to replace the gear? I cannot get the pin driven out of the shaft!
Thanks for your help on this..

be careful driving pin out with starter on machine, you could bend the shaft. briggs and stratton sells a universal swivel attachment for removing the starter mounting bolts. this way you can support the shaft for driving out the pin.

You need to pull the flywheel to replace that gear
