I have repeatedly cleaned my M's gas tank with muriatic acid followed by several water rinses to remove the acid, and then moister remover to dry it. However, whenever I check the insides of the tank, thinking that I'm finally done cleaning, I find rust all over. I'm guessing this is flash rusting as immediately after my acid cleaning/water rinse the insides are shiney clean. How do I prevent this flash rusting from occuring long enough so I can get a proper sealant applied? Any help appreciated.

rinse with mek twice, then use your sealer. I used redcoat. Most of these polymers will cover over the light surface rust you are discribing with out any problems. But if you have a lot of flaky rust this needs to be removed.

I took my tank to a local radiator shop and they cleaned and coated it. Best $50 I have spent in a long time.

You made a problem when using acid, the way yo go now is immediatly after dumping the acid rinse with water. Next absorb as much water with cotton then coat the inside with WD-40 which will prevent rust due to its water displacing properties. When ready to put a coating liner wash out with alcohol.
