Ford 2000 12v. converted: gen light stays on...

I just got a Ford 2000 (1965, 3 cylinder gas) that someone else has previously converted to 12 volt alternator. It starts, runs fine and keeps the battery charged, but the alternator (or gen) light stays on because they probably didn"t wire it right. I could just disconnect the lamp, but I"d like it to work right.
Any Suggestions?

We need to know what brand and model alternator was used. Most conversions use a Delco alternator with built in regulator, but you never know.

Just checked: It is a Delco-Remy,and I guess the little silver box stuck on the side of it is the regulator? The alternator has a hot terminal, a GND, and a connector marked R & F. Then there is another connector with one wire that is not connected to anything.
Does that help? Thanks for your reply. Not sure how the message board works or how to reply...

Sounds like an early 60's to early 70's Delco external regulator alternator. The voltage regulator should have 4 terminals marked F 2 3 4.

F connects to F on the alternator

2 connects to R on the alternator

3 connects to constant battery voltage( not switched)

4 connects to your gen light. One side of your gen light should go to the ign or acc terminal of the ignition switch, the other side should go to the #4 regulator terminal.

Thanks JH! I'll give this a try. I guess I'll have to trace the Ignition switch wiring to see where goes what. Do you think the original switch will be marked? The gen light bulb must have been a six volt originally, but seems to be holding up so far with 12v...

The switch terminals are usually marked.Either stamped on the terminals or on the switch next to each terminal. As a last resort you can check the switch terminals with a 12V test light. Ground the clip lead of the test light to the tractor frame and touch the probe to the switch terminals. BAT should be hot in all switch positions. IGN or ACC will be hot only when the switch is ON or ACC position. one gen light lead is almost certainly connected to the IGN or ACC terminal at the switch,as this is standard with almost all generator or alternator systems. Some Delco alternator systems use an extra resistor wired in parallel to the gen light if the gen light does not flow enough power to close the field relay in the regulator. In many cases you can do without this resistor by installing a higher wattage bulb in the gen light,or wire another "hidden" gen light connected in parallel with the original. just tuck the new hidden light behind the dash panel. GM used a second"hidden" gen light on many GM cars in the 70's.

Thanks again, JH! I haven't had time to look deeper into the gen light issue yet. Just got electronic ignition installed to replace the points, AND discovered someone has bypassed the fuel pump so the carb has only gravity feed like the older Fords. That must be why it has suck low power. I'll be fixing that as soon as I find out why they bypassed the pump: leaky or clogged? We'll see...
