I recently got a Farmall M. It has been sitting for several years now but ran when it was parked. I am looking to get it running and opperating properly first. I am planning to do a total restoration on it later though. I guess what I need to know is what steps should I take Before I crank it over for the first time? It is a gas, and there was still gas in the tank, so I figure a carb rebuild will be nesessary. I have already done the obvious like new plugs and stuff like that. But what else is there that I should do before I try and start it? Thanks alot, -Adam

I'd put tranny fluid in the cylinders instead of oil, it does a better job of getting down to the rings and loosening them up if they are stuck. Also as the others have said the carb things. And you should also put in new points, condenser, rotor and cap.

Assuming it is not stuck, pull the plugs and squirt some oil in the cylinders, let it set for a while, and turn the engine over several times to get the cylinders lubricated. With the plugs out you may be able to get enough rpm with the starter to build up oil pressure. This will prevent a dry start.

Drain the gas tank and pull the sediment bowl. Gas tends to gell up after a coupple of years. Pull the sediment bowl out of the botom and clean to get the junk and rust out of it that has been intheir for years. Maybe fludh the tank out with some water or kerosense b/c gum deposits build up on the bottom. Install new fuel filter and fuel lines to carb. The old ones are probbally cracked and dry rotted. Carb rebuild to make sure all the ports and passages are cleaned out and reassemble. drain the oil pan and oil filter. Put fresh oil in about5 quarts or until it runs out of the top petcock on the oil pan. Hook battery and cables up at start er up let us know if it wont start!!!

Bad news. When I pulled the hood off of the M I noticed that the mice had packed the exaust manifold with crud. The muffler was takin off years ago and was replaced with a coffee can. The can kept the rain and snow out but the mice got in and filled it right up to the top. Upon using 3 cans of WD-40 to get it off I found out that not only was the manifold packed but so were the cylinders. I am going to need to pull the head off and clean the cylinders out. I might as well replace the rings as well. I guess I will update you on my progress after I pull the head off. thanks, -Adam Zich
