Let me start off by appoligizing for the long post. I have an A-C B that I have decided to repair/restore. It was used last about 3yrs. ago and ran very poorly then. It had been my wife's great-grandfathers, and we took over working the farm after he died. I am fairly new to this, but have worked on many cars and have done minor repairs to the other tractor and implements. It quit starting when he died, mainly because he new the trick to starting it since it has many field fixes, and has more baling twine for repairs then my work truck has duct tape.

It was put up in the barn with gas in the tank which has since evaporated, so I know I need to clean the tank and rebuild the carb since that used to leak. What is the best way to clean the inside of the tank?

Secondly I know the wiring is shot. I am pretty sure 90% of the components work still, but I need new wires, magneto switch, and ameter. Where is a good place to find replacement parts for these. Is it better to convert to 12v while I am doing this. It has a coil and not a magneto on it so I'm not sure how much more is involved in a conversion.

I know I'll have more questions as I am working on this so I'll post as they come up. Thanks in advance.

Hi Vince,

You may have a magneto ignition where the internal coil had died and someone added an external coil. What is your tractor's serial number? You'll find this on the transmission housing top adjacent to the shift lever. It will begin with a B. If you don't have a hand crank, take out all the plugs and turn the engine over by hand using the fan. If you hear an obvious loud "snap" sound a couple of times during one complete revolution, you have a true magneto and the external coil is some kind of add-on to correct a prior problem.

I prefer a magneto ignition myself and have made some changes to my '42B that in my judgement has made it "better" - at least for my use as a working tractor. That includes a conversion to 12v with a modern alternator and voltmeter instead of the old 6v generator and ammeter. You might get some ideas by browsing my own website and the links therein. That is, unless you are a restoration purist that insists on originality over function :o).

Your gas tank should be cleaned, modified and lined. I recommend installing a riser on the fuel bowl and a low point drain petcock in the bottom of the tank. I have used a two part epoxy for a liner that has worked out very well. Cleaning is addressed at the epoxy link.

A source for an entirely new AC-B wiring harness is here.

The AC forum on this site is also a good place to post questions and get different opinions from people who have/know ACs specifically. The B is a very popular model with many still out there and functioning as good as new.
