Help!! I've got a '51 Ford 8N that I'm having a problem getting to run. I was working the tractor and it was running great. It started to miss a little, like a plug was fouling, and lose power so I drove it over to my shop and killed it to check the plugs. The plugs were fine. When I tried to restart it the engine would try to run, i.e. lope along a few revolutions, the die. Then it wouldn't start at all. When I choked it it would, again, try to start but wouldn't stay running. I recently put a carb kit in, new points, condenser, coil, plugs, etc. I blowed air back through the carb into the tank thinking I might have trash in the line, no help. I took the carb off and checked it for trash, no help. I checked the points and was getting weak spark, if any. I had already purchased an electronic ignition kit earlier so I put it on. The tractor tried to start, loped along a few beats then backfired through the air cleaner with white/gray smoke. Won't start. What next?

Sounds like a fuel problem. Can you keep the engine running by squirting little squirts of starting fluid in the carb?

Maybe a bad ignition switch. Or it also may be a fuel flow problem, pull the carb drain plug and see if you get a good flow of gas out the bottom of the carb. If you don't you have a problem with not getting enough fuel.

I really don't know much about the electronic ignition installation on this system. I worked on an 8N once with the same kind of trouble and it ended up being the resistor that mounts by the amp gauge. It cuts the voltage back on the wire that goes to the distributor{I think about half}. Don't know if this would even be close but I thought it might be worth mentioning
