Have new starter cables throughout starter system on a 54 Major. Starter is good, battery is good and have current to the solenoid (new). But the solenoid doesn't do its thing and connect battery to starter - what could be happening here? Does the solenoid have to be grounded to work? Probably Operator error - it usually is. ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ---

Take a flashlight. It has a battery and a bulb, some metal tabs and a slide switch. If the slide switch connects the adjacent terminals, current flows from the battery thru the wiring and lights the light.

Same holds true for the solenoid.

It has 2 circuits.

1. Is the high current circuit made up of the battery, wiring solenoid switch (high current terminals) and starter.

2. Is the low power circuit made up of the ignition switch, start switch (function) and primary (low current) solenoid terminal or terminals. To get the solenoid to energize you have to put voltage (6 or 12v as required) across the solenoid. Some only have one small terminal. These require the body (case) of the solenoid to be in good contact with the tractor chassis.

On the Ford type safety start systems, voltage comes from the ignition switch (to a small terminal on the solenoid) but the start function is a push button on top of the transmission which, when depressed, grounds a 4th terminal (2nd small terminal) which completes the primary circuit and energizes the solenoid. If you have the safety start function and only have a 3 terminal solenoid it will not work.

Could they have sold you the wrong type of solenoid. Some have one side of the solenoid coil connected to the large BAT terminal on the solenoid and have the small solenoid terminal connected to ground through the start switch to complete the circuit and energize the solenoid. With this type, you have to use care to connect the battery cable to the correct terminal on the solenoid(usually marked BAT on the solenoid case)
The more common type of solenoid has one side of the solenoid coil connected to ground internally and power fed to the start terminal from the starter switch. If the solenoid you installed has the wrong internal wiring scheme,or if the bat cable is on the wrong large post,it could cause your problem.

Thank you Jon. I think I have a grounding problem, but will follow your advice and see what happens.

David, The soleniod does need to be bolted to a good grounding surface to work correctly, the secondary or high amp side is just a path for the current, the switching side to the ignition switch needs a ground to work. Hope this helps.

Van, I think grounding is my problem. Thanks for your help.
