8N fine when cold, stops when warm

We"re having trouble with our 8N now that it"s summer. It runs fine in the cold winter weather initially, but starts running rough then dies after about 30 minutes of operation in the winter. In the summer - we have 5 to 10 minutes before it dies. We"re trying to use the backhoe attachment and progressing slowly because of the need for so many cool-down periods. We"ve changed the spark plugs, cleaned out the carb. Two of the pistons have low compression. Spark plugs are black after a few minutes of operation and we're cleaning them every other day.

Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this? Do we need the engine rebuilt?

I hate to disagree with everyone but 5-10 minutes sounds like bad ignition switch to me. It's easy to check. Just jumper across it tne next time it happens. You'll know soon enough. James

That's a classic coil problem, replace it. Won't solve your engine problem, but it will run.

Make sure the main jet is set a lean as possible to help with the fouling. Use Autolite AL-437 spark plugs.

Do you have a good thermotat installed, so the engine is warming up properly.

Next time it dies, immediately check for spark. If spark has been lost, likely, you have a heat-sensitive coil or condensor, or POSSIBLY a weak ignition switch.

Sounds like an engine rebuild would be in order but I doubt that is your problem. You might want to try a new ignition coil first, they will sometimes be OK when cool but quit when they get warm.
