My NAA gets stuck in 2 gears when shifting into 2nd, 3rd and 4th. 1st and reverse work fine. I see all these hints on how to get the gears un-jam but I"m not having any problem with that, I just move the shifter and it will go into first or reverse. I"ve pulled the shifter cover off and I see no problem with the shifter knob or forks. The top shaft of gears has about 1/8" of total movement. Is this a formal amount of movement? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like you have a detent ball stuck or worn out on your shifter rails. Don't know which side (I "think" it will be the one on the right side of the tractor as you are sitting on it), remove the big bolt on the side in the center and towards the bottom of the tranny case and remove the spring and ball. Check the ball for damage and replace if neccessary. With the ball out, try to shift gears (with the engine not running) and see if that fixes it. If not, try the left side.

Good luck,
Dan

I looked at the detent balls and springs and all seems ok. While I had the ball and spring out on the right side of the tractor I tried to shift and see what happens. I see the rail moving and see two of the detents as it moves but the third I only see ½ of it. Any idea what might be causing it not to move all the way? Also as I drive it I here what sounds to like a gear is riding next to another (grinding), just about to engage. Any help would be appericiated.

If you want some pics of the tranny and hydraulic sections split, and a full tranny guts replacement, you can click on the link below to my latest NAA project to give you a good visual.

This rail slides back and forth through openings in the tranny housing on both ends towards the front and the back. The openings are blind so as to not leak tranny fluid from between the rails. The front opening is cast into the tranny housing, and the rear opening is cast into the HYDRAULIC housing and is sealed by the gasket that is in between the tranny and hydraulic housings. It is possible that either debris or part of this gasket got down into this blind hole and is not letting the rail slide all the way in, or crud has built up around the outside of the rail in the area that slides into the opening and is keeping the rail from sliding in all the way as well. Unfortunately, the only way to get to these holes is to split the tractor between the tranny and hydraulic sections. This split is actually very easy and quick, just make sure you have a replacement gasket on hand before doing it so you can put it back together.

Investigate some more and let us know.

Good luck,
Dan
