GM Alternator Over Charging

So far, everything works great! And that is the problem, it won't quit charging. It cooked the battery that is in there as it over charged it. Some have said that as far as they can tell, I have it all wired correctly and that the battery was the problem. I guess the battery can cause it to over charge? I guess I have never heard of that. I am thinking that the alternator may be defectective in the sense that the VR isn't working correctly.

Anyone have any Ideas? Do I need to add a resistor to the battery feed from the alt to knock down the current? I wouldn't think so. Or is this just the classic sign of a defective voltage regulator?

The alternator's #2 terminal will be jumpered over to the alternator's large output stud for voltage sensing OR wired back to the battery cable for more accurate voltage sensing. (If this wire is not connected, the alternator will "default" to a higher charging voltage, 1 or 2 Volts higher than normal.)

If you have both terminals hooked up like that, you need to verify the charging voltage with a QUALITY digital meter, or an accurate analog meter. (CHEAPY digital meters tend to pick up electrical "noise" from the charging and ignition systems, and "freak out", giving inaccurate or scrambled readings.)

You should be seeing about 13.5 to 14.5 Volts at the battery. Much higher than this will "cook" the battery.

Be aware that a defective (sulfated) battery will get hot and boil when charged to normal level.

I would definately buy another 77 or even an 88 for that matter. I would probably look for one with hydraulics on it as mine doen't have it. Although it doesn't qite have the snoot that my Farmall M has, I like it as well.

I think I'll take the 77 to a couple of tractor pulls soon to see how it does. I think it still has good power, just uses a little oil. Maybe its the valve guides. Come to think of it, it does smoke when it starts up after sitting. I don't know what the 77 weighs, but I would guess around 4000 lbs. It has the cast iron rim centers, mechanical lift, belt pulley, stamped front rims, and no fluid in the tires.
