I took the magnetto off my H to clean behind it and did not pay attention what position the gears were in when I took it out. Is there a way to put it back on {and in time}without pulling the front pulley and the front cover off? Also where can I find how tight I need to torqe the head, rod bearings and main bearings?

Take out the sparkplugs.
Put your thumb over the #1 plug hole (closest to the radiator)
Have somebody slowly crank the engine over by hand.
When the pressure builds up and pushes your thumb away, it is the compression stroke. Look in the hole with a flashlight and turn the engine until the piston is at the top. This is top dead center (TDC) for #1.
Turn the magneto until the rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder plugwire on the distributor cap. Install it in this position while the #1 piston is still at TDC.
Put it all back together, re-install the plugs and it should be back in time.

Correct, except that the magneto is installed in the full retard position, that is with the top against the block. Then rotate it out until it trips.

Forgot that you rotate engine one full rev with the crank before pulling the top of mag out until it trips. That is, install with #1 at TDC, top against block, rotate one rev to next TDC and pull top out until impulse coupling trips.
