Generator engine in a tractor?

I have a 57 851 Ford tractor with a busted block so I am trying to purchase a replacement engine. Several folks have offered to sell me 172 engines taken off of generators. I have found a rebuilt engine from an 841 being parted out but it will cost me $550 more than the other engines which have also been recently overhauled. Right now, I plan to use the tractor, not show it or sell it. Should I spring for the extra dollars to have this "original style" engine to protect future resale value?

You need to look at the engine output end. A lot of generators don't have a front bearing, so there can be a lot of extra wear on the rear shaft bearing of a generator engine.
See it run, listen to it, and check for oil leaks.

check the crankshaft end on the generator engine, sometimes they are threaded/tapered to accept the gen input shaft and not setup for a clutch
