Hi.

I have a Ford 6600 tractor (manufactured in late 1960s) that, when idling in neutral, it rocks front to back about an inch to 2 inches.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Jim

If you shut it off it will probably still rock. It is the fluid ballast in the rear tires sloshing when you first stop. 6600's were built from 1975 to about 1982.

You are absolutely right in that it continues rocking after it shuts off. Regarding the fluid ballast in the rear tires sloshing, can you tell me how to fix that problem?

The easiest fix is to just not consider it a problem. Really does no harm, tractors have been doing just that ever since the first guy put less than a valve-level fill of liquid ballast in a tire. Fuller tires rock much less; imperceptible.

Remove it and put on solid weights.

That sounds like an engine flywheel or balancer problem to me. Does the tractor rock back and forth at higher speeds as well?. How does the engine Start? Give us more information

Hi.

No; the tractor does not rock back and forth at higher speeds. It only rocks when idling or when first turned off.

The engine starts right up with no problem.
