I am having a heck of of time getting electrolis to work. 5 gallon plastic bucket, 2 gallon water with 1/2 box of washing soda. I have cleaned all connections tried both a trickle & 15 amp charger. Bottom line I could make more bubbles after I drink a beer than I can get in this setup. Charger reflects no amps????
What am I doing incorrect?

Arm and Hammer Washing Soda works great for me in a 1 tablespoon per gallon of water mix. You have to make certain that your positive and negative electrodes on your battery charger are contacting CLEAN metal surfaces for things to really work well. You may need to brush clean a spot on whatever you intend to de-rust on a wire wheel before you will see your amperage meter rise to acceptable levels. You should also wire brush your sacrificial metal occasionally to remove the build-up of rusty gunk. My electrolysis tank runs 365 days a year and I couldn't live without it. I have five old Ford tractors in various stages of restoration and always find something that needs to be tanked. Hope this helps.

The additive to the water should be alkaline (low Ph) It increases the conductivity of the water. I have had very good luck using Sodium Bisulphate also known as Ph- (minus) used in swimming pools. Some washing soda doesn"t lower the Ph enough although Arm and Hammer (Sodium Carbonate) should work and is safer. Be careful around the lower ph additives however, they are caustic. I use about a 1/4 cup per 5 gallons. I don"t use too caustic a solution like lye, it can eat the metal.

I have used this method several times. Using a plastic drum and a 15 amp charger. Put needed amount of water in drum and I use as large as possible piece of sheet metal curved to fit wall of drum. Attach positive lead to sheet metal. Attach negative lead to part to derust and place in drum so it doesn"t touch sheet metal. I have then added either table salt or lye to the water until the charger registers 15 amps. Time required depends on amount of rust. If you use lye it also removes paint. Between parts I usually pressure wash or replace sheet metal.

Have you tried reversing the charger leads? I don't know how much is in a half box,but that sounds like it could be a bit strong. What are you using for an electrode and is it touching the part you want to clean?

I kept adding washing soda to increase ampreage. My understanding is that postive is sacrifical. (sp) I used 2 gal steel can with old bar of steel in bucket of solution. Negetive is suppended in solution (part to be cleaned). Charger when attached to Battery will take 5+ amps. Should I change solution?

The bubbles are minute and sometimes it takes a few seconds of staring before you see them especially if the solution gets gunky. It works and it's like magic? Good luck!
