What is a good solvent(s) to use. The tractor was stored for several years (don't know how long) with fuel in it. Thanks for the help.

The rubbing alcohol will work but its 70% water. I always use denatured alcohol which is 100% alcohol. You can find it for about $9.00 a gallon at any good hardware store by the paint.

Plug the ports put in a quart of rubbing alcohol wiyh a handfull of nails or screws, shake once in a while. Empty the following day and repeat 1 more time. Remove the screws with a extendable magnet, donot use gravel you will never get it all out.

If the tank has a baffle in it you will never get all the screws and nails out either. I do like the idea of rubbing alcohol, but only a quart?

A quart was sufficient for the size tank I was cleaning as most of the crud was on the bottom, if a baffle is encountered just roll it over the screws [I pefer short wood screws] are removed through the filler opening. I stick with it because it works. Putting in acid will make a coating a must.

Acetone and muratic acid are used to prep a tank for coating. If its not rusty just acetone alone should do the trick.
