While mowing a few weeks ago, my JD 300 acted like it was running out of gas. There was plenty of gas and after it sat awhile it started and finished mowing. I have used it since with no problems. Now it will not start. The coil is good, spark plug is new. The engine cranks, but will not start. I"m getting a spark, but I"m not sure it is strong? Could it be an ignition switch problem? Any possible remedies would be appreciated.

I had the same problem when I was mowing with my dad"s JD301. It also felt like it was running out of gas and finally did quit. Found out the fuel filter was clogged, so I fixed that, but it was still sluggish after 15 minutes work, and would die. Next, we checked out the fuel pump, noticing that air was entering the fuel system. it ended up being a cracked intake on the fuel pump. But then I was still fighting the same symptoms. This time it was the injector pump, due to the fact that when we opened it up we found "coffee ground" type deposits had built up within it. Had it rebuilt and the 301 is going strong. The guy that rebuilt the pump didn"t know how the tractor could run at all with a pump that was in that bad of shape. Needless to say Dad doesn"t use an old 55 gallon drum as a fuel container anymore...Hope this helps.

Make sure you have spark at the plug. Pull the plug out and leave it connected to the wire. Lay the bottem of the plug on top of the engine and crank the engine. Look for a bright blue spark. If you have spark try giving it a small shot of starting fluid in the carb. and the try to start it. If it fires your not getting fuel to the engine. Check the fuel level Fresh? see if the filter is clogged. Does your engine have a fuel pump? Check to see if its working.
