It was my understanding that the 5th and 6th gears in wartime tractors were always there---your tractor HAS those gears, they are simply locked out so that they cannot be used with STEEL WHEELS (as it would be unsafe). The "kit" was used to remove the "lockout" and enable the higher gears after the war ended and rubber tires once again became available. A scrapyard featuring these old tractors would be my best bet to find the parts, and you'd need a parts catalog in order to know what to look for.

Adam, I haven't added these but have a 42 that is in the same shape. Many of these war tractors were made that way. JD used to sell the kit for adding these but I think you would be best served to get the shop manual for a B from John Deere. I have one and it is very good and detailed (don't have the publication number handy now but I know they don't have one for an A). Once that is in hand, you can likely find the parts from a salvage yard in your area. There is a website called atis.net that has a listing of salvage yards and there is more sites that will. Should be fairly easy to get. I am not brave enough to do much with transmissions yet. If you need some more detail, lots of help is available on the JD board. Clooney knows more than I ever will.
