Yesterday, as I used my 1960(?) TO35 Ferguson tractor, I heard a boiling noise. I checked the radiator and it was low. I decided to stop working. The next day I added a gallon of water and all went well, then it started to spray water towards me as I drove. Needless to say, I put it up and now am thinking what it could be. Any ideas???

You have a leak and the fan is pulling the spray back at you.

Thanks, Im no mechanic. I guess I"ll check the hoses first. Would that also cause the sound I heard, something like boiling water? I do appreciate your help.

Could be hoses... may be a hole in radiator core... could be leaky water pump... could be stuck thermostat causing water (coolant, I hope) to boil out the overflow.

Good advice is to check ALL fluid levels before you fire your tractor up - without fail!! You'll prevent a lot of needless repairs if you do.
(I always make sure I've got plenty of coffee with me as well!)

Illinois Boy, checked the hoses and they are ok, but once the engine is started for a few minutes, water (coolant) comes out of the overflow tube. So I guess its just a stuck thermostat, like you mentioned. Now just where in the heck is the thermostat located. I would guess at the place where the top radiator hose is located. Do you think a novice could replace the thermostat? Do I need anything special, like gasket goop or something. Thanks.

You can do it...
First of all, drain the coolant down to a level below the port where the top hose is at on the radiator. The thermostat is either inside the top hose itself, or under the pipe thingy (correctly called a thermostat housing) that the top hose connects to on the engine - not the radiator. Not sure on your tractor but when you take off the top hose, you should be able to spot it easily if it's in the hose. If it's under the housing there should be two bolts to remove. Make sure the new thermo goes back in exactly the same way as the old one comes out - won't work if you get it in the wrong way!!
You'll need to replace the gasket as well, which can be purchased with the themostat. TO35's are fairly common and your Ford dealer will more than likely have the parts in stock. If not, get on the Harry Ferguson page and they can point you to a supplier. Should be very easy to find the parts. You might go to that page and ask specifics about your tractor - again, I don't have a Ferguson, but the guys over there are dedicated addicts!!!!

Illinois Boy, thanks alot. I think we will give it a try. I'll check out the Ferguson page and see what they can tell me about the part. Im sure we can find a thermostat somewhere here in the mountains. Again, thanks and I hope this will take care of our problem.
