We suffered an arson attack early on Monday morning and one of the victims was a recently restored T20 Ferguson belonging to my father. We were wondering if anyone had any experience of renovating fire damaged tractors and could offer advice - the damage is extreme and the insurance company are treating it as a write off and say it should be scrapped - but it would be great if the tractor could be saved. All help/ideas gratefully received.

Thank you for all your comments and advice. It is so sad to see the tractor, which was saved from the depths of a blackberry bush and restored by students at the local agricultural college. The fire was so bad that the wheels have buckled and the bodywork has melted and the advice from the guy who oversaw the restoration is that a rebuild is out of the question because of all the unseen damage to the metalwork. However, he has put us in touch with a local tractor collector who will take it away for parts - so at least it can be put to good use. I can't go into details but the police are treating the fire as arson and are taking it very seriously - and we have a far idea of who did this to us. Incidentally we live in rural England where this kind of thing simply doesn't happen - as a result of the fire we have lost the tractor, a garage full of possessions and my father's woodturning workshop and a lifetime's collection of tools.

Dad was interested in buying a burned out pickup from a lumber yard fire 40 years ago. Was told that if the fire was hot enough to melt the radiator (then metal), the vehicle was not worth rebuilding.

First off, don't let the insurance company just scrap it out. Buy it back from them if at all possible. Without seeing the tractor I really don't know if all of it is salvageable, but I would bet that at least part of it is. From experience I can tell you that sometimes the wheels and some other parts can be very soft after a hot fire and even though they may look good they will eventually bend or break. If the tires did not burn then the wheels will be OK. It's going to be a guessing game, and I hope that you guess right.

Well unless its a total melt down it could be saved but may cost a lot to do so. The engine and tranny may still be ok but all the wires and rubber parts will need to be replaced.

First of all - I hope they find the person/people that did this and you prosecute the fire out of 'em!!

All the seals and gaskets are probably cooked beyond use as well. I'd suggest a total tear apart and start over. That may not be the case, but I helped work on a 1086 after a cab fire and it took all of the above to get it back into the land of operational. Try to find somebody locally to take a look at it and give you an opinion. It's hard to tell without seeing the damage.

Hi Mr. old...
