On my OC3 I have discovered the check ball at the oil filter mount is missing. The coil spring is there but no ball. What is the purpose of the check ball? Will the filter do its job with the ball missing. Thanks PC

The check ball is to hold the oil in your oil filter when your engine is not running. Your shop manual may recommend that you drain your filter via the plug that holds the spring and the missing ball to save you a mess when you remove your filter. My guess is that you still will get full flow of filtered oil without the ball but the bearings won't get same until you fill the filter each time you start your machine. By the way I ain't no expert, but I do enjoy my OC-46 crawler/loader.

Good luck,
EJP

what are chances of locating a check ball of right size?

Eric might be correct about the reason for the check ball, but I always thought it was a pressure relief valve that if for any reason the filter became plugged and the oil pressure inside there rose too high, then the oil coming into that filter assembly would be able to bypass the filter and go directly back into the lubrication system, not filtered but at least the system didn't fail. Maybe someone else can fill us in on that for sure. Meanwhile, I took the ball out of one of those that I've got here and it is a 5/16" ball (or ball bearing I guess). The spring on mine is 1 5/8" in length. I have no way of testing the spring power or tension of the spring but it seems somewhat weak, certainly not any great amount of strength. Are you 100% positive that the ball isn't stuck in there with some gunky oil? Mine was and it was hard to get out and had to be jolted out carefully. Those spin-on filters and the base brasket that goes with them were also used on the Case VA series engines, exactly the same part by the looks of it.
