Kickback on a hand crank start

I just bought a 1928 McCormick Deering 10-20. I cranked it a few times, and it seems ready to start, but my neighbor warned me about a backfire putting the crank in reverse. He says it will kick back hard enough to break my arm. Well, I don't want a broken arm, so I thought I'd get some advice before I try again.
Thanks for any help.
Matthew

There should be a mark on the flywheel to time the mag. Turn the engine over slowly until you see the mark at the bottom. Pull the spark plugs first though. Hand crank the engine until the piston is just starting to travel down from the compression stroke.Next turn the mag slowly until you hear a click from the mag. and tighten it up. This is how my owners manuel shows it to be done. I have never had a back fire on my tractor. Fires right up every time.

My Dad taught me a long time ago to never wrap your thumb around the crank and only pull up on the crank to prevent getting a broken arm.

Don't wrap your fingers around the crank handle.Just use the palm of your hand on the crank.Kick back happens so fast, you can't let go of the crank fast enough to get your fingers out of the way.

I dont know how to set the mags initial static start timing on that tractor, BUT IF ITS TOO FAST N SHE FIRES BEFORE TDC THATS WHEN SHE KICKS BACKWARDS. Therefore, on my mag equipped hand start tractors, I set them to start fire at TDC BUT NEVER BEFORE. Also if youre pulling upward instead of pushing that crank downward youre safer if she kicks back and dont have your thumb wrapped around that crank handle so if it kicks backwards it catches it.

if its kicking back, your timing is off. pg
