I am looking to buy my first tractor. I have found a little John Deere 650. It appears to run well and the bucket appears to have good hydraulic pressure. The brakes need replacing and it jumps out of gear in 4th in high gear. Any ideas on how much it will take to replace the brakes and fix the gearing problem? I would have a mechanic fix the gears but are the brakes very complicated to replace???

In all my other talking, neglected to answer your question. The brakes are not hard to repair. Will be easier if you go on and remove the fenders and get them out of your way. All the fasteners on this tractor will be metric since it is really a Yanmar with green paint on it. Look for a tag on the rear of the tractor and mine says Yanmar.

I have a 1981 year model 650. They are tough tractors and stand up well under most conditions. Think there are 2 styles of brake shoes on them both pretty much the same except the early ones like mine are not quite as easy to get all the life out of the shoe with out doing some shimming and reversing the shoe. Think they changed it on later models I used to go through a set of brakes almost yearly using a mower on it and had to adjust them at least every other time I cut grass with it. I converted them to wet type brakes and have gotten almost 10X the life out of them.. The transmission in this tractor is a constant mesh sliding collar shift if I remember correctly. That may be somewhat expensive to repair. Have never had any problem like that in the 18 years I have owned it. For about 15 years it had a loader on it. It was an IH loader that was adapted to the tractor and had a much larger bucket. I added power steering to it. It was almost impossible to steer with out the power steering kit. All in all it is a very good tractor and very fuel efficent. I have mowed many seasons and used no more than 10 gallons of fuel all season to mow the 3 acre lot we have here with a 5' flail mower. The price of having my injection pump rebuilt year before last took care of all the money saved on fuel costs though!! Pump and injectors rebuilt cost almost $600.00! Take care of the pump and service the fuel filter regulary to keep water ouit of it. NEVER EVER use ether to crank it. I lost my temper one time and did this and it blew the bottom off both pistons!! Have really liked mine for many years. John Deere can truly be proud of the fact that this Yanmar product is bearing their name!1
