I went out to start my DC and noticed the battery cable negative end had turned black and was starting to collect some corrosion around it. This tractor is wired with a positive ground so this is actually the positive battery post (This cable end was brand new about 2 months ago.) I tried to start it and the tractor turned over several times but would not fire. Tried a couple more times and could not get it to fire and the battery acted like it was dying. Unhooked the battery and put it on the charger where it immediately went to 100% charged. I admit that I am not the most mechanically inclined person on the planet. Do I have a short somewhere? What would cause the cable end to turn black? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like corrosion at the ground cable terminal you replaced a couple months ago has caused it to develop high resistance connection to the cable. This results lots of heat while cranking – hence the cable blackening. And the high resistance will cause the starter to crank slow or not crank at all – even though the battery is fully charged.

You might try removing the terminal and thoroughly cleaning the clamp surfaces and the mating conductor end, then putting it back together. It should work again for a while. However for a permanent fix you need to replace the cable/terminal with a 1-piece cable assembly (where the terminal is swaged/soldered to the cable conductor).

Tip: Be sure to buy an AWG #0 or #00 cable. The #4 gage or so cables sold for 12 volt cars are simply too small to work well on a 6 volt system!
