Best setup for sandblasting?

Given a nice budget but on a small shop scale, what would your ideal setup be for blasting implements and larger parts? Say a system that could blast a couple of plow arms and a set of cultivators for a farmall SA or 140 in a couple of hours.

The 100 lb. pressure blasters are a good size unless you have lots more air. You can always change nozzles up or down sizes if you get more air later. Like John said more is better on air and go for all you can afford. I run a 16 cfm 2 stage with 80 gal tank on a 100 lb. pressure blaster and wish I had more air. Sometimes I have tied two compressors to together but make sure the pressure ratings & switches are same if doing that. Proper moisture traps and plumbing to get moisture out can not be stressed enough for blasting. Use black iron pipe sloping it towards your traps at ends under valves and use a bigger pipe at end of trap and reduce down for a 1/4 ball valve for drain. Put a moisture trap on your blaster also. The air is too hot running off a short line from compressor and you will condense too much moisture in blaster that way so the longer you can run plumbing and hoses to cool air the better and get moisture out before it gets to blaster. I got lucky and bought a filtered air supply unit military surplus to plumb into my blasting helmet. Brut makes some good blasters and has parts for my old San Blast brand too: www.brutmfg.com Marco makes some HD commercial blasters and Lindsay and has parts for Lindsay, Truman-San Blast and others: www.marcousa.com

Scott,

I use a 100 pound pressure blaster from Brute. Been using it for about 10 years with good to middl'n success. You can get bigger, that gives longer run time. I don't have enough air to justify a bigger one. Biggest drawback is the use of air. They use a LOT, If I were starting over from scratch and had a nice budget I would spend about $1500-2000 on a 2 stage compressor with 80+ gal tank giving at least 20-22 CFM at 125psi. More is better. Next get some really good water separation. I use a couple of the wall mount bowls and some other homemade solutions. Use iron lines to plumb the air, that will help get the water out. Plumb the air out the top of the lines and use drops out the bottom to drain the water.

You will need to use thick welding gloves and a blasting helmet/hood and use a face mask to get the dust out. Silicosis is no joke.

Good luck!
