i have a manual but the pages are a little hard to read....can anyone tell me the firing arangement on a Ford tractor. also is number one cyclinder nearest the fan or is it the steering wheel? the coil is front mounted. in the manual i have it appears to be the following, 1-2-4-3 from the fan.
thanks

The cylinders are 1234 front to back as you suspect. Every front mont distributer cap I have seen has ALL 4 terminals marked clearly.

You have the firing order correct, and the #1 cylinder "nipple" on the front mount distributor is marked on the distributor cap. However - it DOES NOT matter which nipple the #1 wire goes into really, as long at the rotor is pointing to that nipple at the top of the compression stroke on #1 cylinder, and you follow the firing order COUNTER CLOCKWISE around the distributor cap. Sometimes the distributor gets off from the mark on the cap.

So, remove #1 spark plug, put your finger over the spark plug hole and spin the engine. Just when your finger gets blown off the hole, look at which nipple the rotor is pointing to. Put the #1 spark plug wire on this nipple, then install the rest of the plug wires in order.

Good luck,
Dan

Dan,

If it is a "front mount" Ford, it is impossible for the rotor to be pointing anywhere but at the #1 nipple when #1 piston is at TDC of the firing stroke, as the distributor can only be installed into the front of the camshaft one way.

Bob - I beg to differ - my 1948 8N was put on 180 degrees off due to the previous owner "forcing" the distributor on (I guess he did not know that the cam was offset). While you are correct that Ford made it dummy proof - my tractor's previous owner was just a bigger dummy. He just wired it to match the distributor he incorrectly installed (yes, the tangs were damaged and I had to build them back up correctly).

Bottom line is - it CAN be installed more than one way and it happens more times than you would think.

Was the distributor broken after being forced on in the wrong position... the mounting ears, or the front bushing support?

The mounting ears on the distributor side cam was chipped on the ends of the edges. Also, the camshaft side slotted cam was worn badly enough on the pushing side (as it is spinning) to allow this incorrect installation to occur. I have heard of this several times on the N Series board. I had to build up the camshaft side of the slotted cam with JB Weld to take up the slop, then build up the edges and ends of the distributor side cam to get it tight again. Won't last forever, but at least until I find a good front mount distributor replacement, and replace the camshaft on my upcoming engine rebuild this winter.

#1 if by the fan or what is the front of the tractor. Almost all engines are that way. As far as fireing order I don't remember but the cap is marks as to which wire goes where so that shouldn't be a problem as long as you hook them up as the cap says. I.E. #2 nipple goes to #2 plugs and so on.
