My Fordson Major has a big leak and I am draining it now. Are diesel tanks safe to weld after cleaning them out. I know gas is just too volital but diesel fuel isn't. I beleive the leak is around a mounting bolt so JB Weld is not a good idea since it is a stressed area. Any suggestions appreciated.

I had a diesel tank fixed last summer by the local rad shop. But first they washed it in some kind of cleaning solution that also removed the exterior paint and inside rust and nutralized the diesel. Them they soldered a full patch on the area thay was piteed and repainted it. The old man at the shop said after the second tank explosion but him in the hospital ,He found the right stuff for cleaning gas and diesel tanks to do welding and soldering on them.

A lot of good advice has been given. Diesel fuel is definitely explosive so removing as much of it as possible, preferably by steam cleaning, is good. Though diesel is not as easy as gasoline to ignite, welding temperature will do it. The exhaust into the tank is a commonly used also. For the repair itself, brazing (bronze welding) would seem the best choice.

Just fill the tank with water before welding. Water doesn't explode.

I meant that if the water stays in the tank of course. If you are able to fill the tank with water, put the cap in and turn it upside down for welding and the water stays in, then it works.

diesel will explode just as good as gas will but it has a good bit to with humidity. best thing to do is drain the tank then wash it out with SOAP and water really good atleast 3 times, more wouldnt hurt, then IMEDIATLY weld it DO NOT wait a few days and weld it, just wash it then weld it, reason being is the water will start some kind of algea that gives off flammable fumes, thats what my grandfather told me to do a few years ago and he knows since they were doin stuff like that in his shop all the time, with the algea thing, quite a few years ago (grandfather told me this too) some guys had to weld a water truck, the truck had sat overnight i think, and they welded on it and opened the roof of the building like a can, they guys obviously died, if you dont feel safe doin this take it somewhere that does!! oh and make sure all of the caps, plugs, etc. are out or off of the tank too

My Dad's oldest brother used to have a welding shop years ago. He used to weld things no one else would touch. He always claimed that you could weld a tank full of gas if you killed the oxygen inside the tank. He used to run a hose from the exhaust of his truck inside the filler neck of the fuel tank and weld away. Scared the crap out of me, but I don't think the man ever blew one up.
