Is the inside casting also sandblasted and painted? The inside castings on my 8N have been painted, and the paint looks fine, in fact inside the castings look beautiful. I'm sure due to the fact they have been sealed in oil. Should I just tape off the openings and sandblast, prime adn paint the outside. The tractor has been completely broken down. Thanks

ps what is the minimum requirements for blasting?

Thanks for your input. This is my first time rebuilding and not sure what to and not to do. I'll save the blasting for sheet metal. Thanks again.

Don (below) mentioned about washing out the insides which is good advice. A friend of mine says NEVER (repeat NEVER) expect to remove sand by washing with solvent, only soap and water (and lots of it). Better yet, don't sandblast other than tinwork that has been removed. Castings etc. are easily prepped by scraping and wire brushing and paint up nicely even by brush afterwards.

The paint inside is also there for a reason, to seal the castings. I strip the engine, trans, etc. with paint stripper and a wire brish on an angle grinder.

HI Eurlith---

DO NOT--repeat DO NOT! SANDBLAST THE INSIDE OF THE TRANNY OR ANY OF THE OIL CONTANING CASTINGS!Sand blasting is only to be done as a last resort in prepering a tractor for paint.....nomater how careful you are some sand will find its way into areas not good for bearings and other working parts.....I am sure others will tell you of there experiances.....since you have it apart you may be able to control it better....but be sure to wash out the inside of these castings before reassembly.....sand blasting is great for parts non related to movement and lubrication....been there - done that-paid the price.....good luck..

I believe the paint inside the housings was Glyptol. It helped the oil to drain down from the sides of the case faster.
