What are the pros/cons of using acetylene vs propane for all around cutting on the farm? For years I've used acetylene but I hear lots of guys are now using propane. I'm buying new equipment and trying to decide which way to go.

The only difference between an acetylene and propane cutting/welding outfit is the tip of the cutting torch,so the cost is only about $10 for an extra tip. I used only acteylene for 30 years and would use up 2-3 large acetylene tanks per year. Three years ago I bought a propane tip for my torch and added a new pad between and in front of the ox/acetylene tanks for the 30# propane tank. This added very little bulk to the welding cart and actually makes it more stable. I do all cutting/heating with propane, and in moments I can switch the regulator to the acetylene tank for brazing,as acetylene works better for that. Because it is such a cheap and energy dense liquified fuel,I am still on my first 30# tank of propane in the time I would have used atleast 6 large tanks of acetylene.
