MY LEFT SIDE CAM GEAR IS LEAKING OIL ON MY 36' MODEL D. I WANT TO REPLACE THE GASKET BUT MY MANUAL TALKS ABOUT "END PLAY". WHAT IS END PLAY? WHAT TECHNIQUES AND METHODS SHOULD I USE WHEN REPLACING THE GEAR COVER BACK ON THE CAM? HOW DO I DETERMINE THE PROPER NUMBER OF GASKETS?
THANKS IN ADVANCE,

End play is the amount a bearing or shaft is able to move from side to side when installed. In your case it is the amount of side to side movement of the bearings and the shaft when installed in the housing. This is controlled by either shims or gasket thickness or sometimes both. When working on a JD governor shaft if you take the left side cover off be sure that you remove the magneto fron the housing FIRST. The magneto base will get broken if you have it on when trying to reinstall the cover.
